Secular engineering student rejects job offers from Hindustan Petroleum and Hindustan Aeronautics

New Delhi: Akhilesh Singh, a resident of Rahamatulla Nagar and a B.Tech. final year student of Saint Joseph Memorial Engineering College shocked all his batch mates with his strange move of rejecting job offers from two top Indian PSUs – Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

If sources are to be believed, his Being Secular beliefs are the reason for not choosing a company whose name starts with the name of a religion.

Speaking to our reporter, on condition of printing the photograph too along with name, one of his close friends and batch mates highlighted the complete story.

“Akhilesh was my roommate in first year. I always believed that he is the man who treats all religions equally. When we all were taking the maximum advantage of free hostel wi-fi by downloading latest movies and other stuff, he simply used to waste the internet and his time by visiting some YouTube channels for videos on secularism.  No one ever saw him reading the hostel newspapers – The Hindu and Hindustan Times. Sometimes I found him reading Amar Ujala, but the very next day I saw him reading Mulk Roznama newspaper. He always did his best to maintain this Secular Equilibrium,” he said.

“When we were buying the model papers just to pass the exams somehow, he was having at least for books for each subject, written by writers of different religions. For Flood Mechanics, he purchased books of R.K. Rajput, Ashfaq Hasan, Harjinder Singh and Jisso Thomas in the beginning and later when he was still not satisfied, he purchased book of Divyankar Jain also,” he added.

“At the end of second year, once I told him that his Lifebuoy soap and Sunsilk shampoo, both are products of Hindustan Unilever Limited. He immediately went to market to buy Hamdard soap and shampoo and he used the same for next two years in hostel,” he added further.

Luckily our reporter got a chance to speak with Akhilesh’s family also. His father who was very disappointed by his decision, said, “My son was never like this before. I do not know what all he was doing in hostel. I never asked also because our neighbor Sharma Ji’s son was also studying in the same college but my son always got better marks than him in all semesters. Wasn’t it more than enough?”

His mother also could not control her emotions. “He was a good reader since his childhood. Akbar-Birbal is his favorite comics till now and he never missed Amar Akbar Anthony movie on TV. After his first year result, I gifted him a watch but he never used it. Initially I thought that he did not like its design but later I came to know that it was an HMT watch, manufactured by Hindustan Machine Tools Limited,” she said in sad tone.

His other friends told that they had applied only for GATE, but Akhilesh applied for GATE as well as Aligarh Muslim University M.Tech. Entrance Exam, Guru Tegh Bahadur Engineering Aptitude Test and Dalai Lama Science & Research Examination.

He performed very well in first three exams but Dalai Lama Foundation had rejected his online application form and did not allow him to appear for the exam because he had written Secular in Religion section while applying.
