New Delhi. In latest development, schools in Delhi and NCR have been asked by the government to start teaching number till 31 as a basic requirement for educating a child. Additionally, identification of odd and even numbers for all children who can speak has been made mandatory. The numbering system till 31 will be taught before Alphabets or any other things are taught to the children as per the latest directive from the ministry of Human Resources and Development.
Delhi education minister in an interview with the schools said, ‘This is being done to ensure that the odd even formula is a success. We are focusing to ensure that the children know about odd and even numbers even before they can speak – this will ensure complete compliance to the odd even formula and reduce pollution and lives of our children and their children too”. Parents meanwhile have raised concerns on this idea. Mrs Sharma, mother of 4 year old Chintoo said, ‘This is ridiculous. This government has done some crazy things, but this is getting out of hand’.
Meanwhile there were questions on how this rule will be enforced. The schools have complained that they do not have the resources to teach and test each and every child on the odd even numbers. However, the Chief Minister has come up with a solution to that – the traffic police are being trained to evaluate all kids over 4 years old for their knowledge of the odd even numbers. As per the commissioner of police, traffic police at each signal or intersection will take an oral test of children to identify odd and even numbers. In case the child fails, a fine of Rs.200 will be charged to the parents. Given that the trial run of this experiment is expected to start from 1st Feb, the police commissioner expects this scheme to bring in an additional 1 crore per month from February for the police and over 2 crore in bribes to the entire police department. The ruling party supported by the police (who are expected to make a lot of money of this scheme) have called out for support of this scheme. The list of oral questions is already being prepared by the police and the scheme looks set to take off from 1st February.
