Srinagar: Disappointed with the lack of support from media for them, Non-Kashmiri students at NIT Srinagar have decided to organize a function to honour Afzal Guru. This function is aimed at attracting national media and generating sympathy and support for the students.
Caution: Mild Lathicharge in progress
There has been unrest at NIT Srinagar since India’s loss to West Indies in the World T20 with 2 groups of students clashing with each other over the celebrations after India’s loss. Tensions rose even higher yesterday when Non-Kashmiri students attempting to leave the campus were lathicharged by the local police. However, unlike the sea of support for JNU students recently, the students received no support from national media houses.
“Someone has to highlight our plight. If we stay on campus, we get attacked by locals. If we attempt to leave, we get lathicharged by the police. Local politicians call it mild lathicharge while I am holding my broken leg with my broken arm. Our grievances have to reach national politicians and for that to happen, we need national media support. They have ignored us till now but after organizing an event in support of Afzal Guru, we are sure they will come and support us”, said Bijender Singh, a 3rd year Electrical Engineering student.
So far, nobody from national news outlets has visited the campus, a sharp contrast to situations at FTII, Hyderabad University and JNU when media outlets temporarily shifted their studios to the Universities to cover the issues 24X7. While some editors blamed the tyranny of distance and said Srinagar is farther than Hyderabad from Delhi, others said they are from Arts background and can’t understand Engineering issues.
Speaking to Faking News, Sujata Mishra, a 4th year student said, “We know we haven’t got veteran students like FTII and JNU but we do have a guy named Ajay Kumar who has suffered a back 3 times and is in his 7th year here. That ought to impress them enough for one interview at least? Anyway, once we celebrate Afzal later this evening, I am sure there will be a wave of support from Delhi based media.”
As per sources, if this fails, students are also planning an explosive press conference on Pratyusha Banerjee’s suicide, like Rakhi Sawant, to attract national media to Srinagar.
