“Have no other option. This is the last resort”: Said helpless Irom Sharmila

Imphal: Just after her release from judicial custody by a court on Monday, Manipuri rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila, who is on a fast for 15 years demanding repealing of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), expressed her desire to convert to Dalit. Sharmila told reporters that her desire to become a Dalit was to attract attention from national and Italian political parties and media houses on her fight against AFSPA. She said being a Dalit woman and fighting for anything also mean a special debate in Parliament. She said this might be the only way to get AFSPA repealed from Manipur state.

Irom Sharmila’s close aides also revealed she might plan to apply for a post graduate course in JNU and organize special meetings in the campus. Although she has not decided what kind of slogan the activist would shout during the meeting.

Irom Sharmila has been under judicial custody and she is fed only through her nose for last one and half decade. She is often released only to be arrested few hours later. She is upset with the attitude of central government and mainstream media houses. She now plans to do ‘Bahut Krantikari’ type stuff to get all the attention her cause needs.

PS: Imphal is the capital of Manipur state (which is India).
