New Delhi. The Narendra Modi-led BJP government recently announced that engineering students across India will be provided free air conditioning units. However, they also announced that all the fans in the house shall be seized by the government authorities. This move has been taken keeping in view of rising number of engineering students hanging themselves to death following increasing unemployment.
This decision received tremendous backlash from the opposition in the parliament. Congress VP Rahul Gandhi targeted HRD Minister Smriti Irani and hinted that her move is backed by personal interest. “She doesn’t want to save the lives of engineering students. Smriti Ji just wants to compensate for the people who suffered lifelong trauma after watching her daily soap Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”, he said in Loksabha.
The coaching class owners and tutors have heavily criticised this move of the government. “If student suicides reduce to an extent where it stops bothering the parents, why will they send their children to our coaching class to study?”, said a Director at one of the coaching classes in Kota, who accused foul play by the government.
Engineering students who felt the heat of being a part of the unemployable industry have welcomed the move. Ravi Pathak, a second year mechanical engineering student said, “We don’t get jobs after graduation and all our talent goes in vain. With more number of air conditioners in the market, we can repair them when required and show our skills.” The distribution of air conditioners to engineering students has motivated parents to send their kids to engineering institutes. “My elder son graduated from an IIT but couldn’t find himself a job. I’m sure he won’t earn enough to buy us an AC even if he gets employed. At least my home will get a new AC if I send my younger son to an engineering college,” said a hopeful father of two.
However, free air conditioners will be provided to all engineering students except those studying in JNU. When we contacted Mrs. Irani to know the reason behind this discrimination, she explained, “The students in JNU are not very fond of hangings. So, it is quite unlikely that they will commit suicide by hanging themselves.”
Our sources confirmed that actor Shah Rukh Khan was disappointed when he heard of the development. In his recent interview, he said, “My upcoming movie Fan is slated to release in April. The government’s timed move of removing fans from a significant number of houses hints at the growing intolerance in the nation.”
