Smart trains proposal hidden in Rail Budget: No idea what they do, but like smart cities, we want them!

New Delhi: TV news channels switched over from Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu’s Rail Budget speech as soon as they thought he was done. After all, the burning issue of what actor Sanjay Dutt was eating as part of his first meal as a free man was too critical not to cover.

Smart trains

Smart train, doing something

In their haste to cover Dutt’s lunch menu, they missed out an important — perhaps. the most important — section in Prabhu’s speech: The smart trains proposal.

Faking News was able to access the un-televised sections of the Rail Budget speech. According to the Union railway minister, the Ministry of Railways is planning the introduction of 25 smart trains across the country. Expected to cost the national exchequer around Rs 20,000 crore, the ministry hopes to fully implement the plan by 2025.

And while Prabhu could not be reached for a comment, a senior official of the rail ministry told Faking News that the smart trains will be deployed across the country to “connect Kargil to Kanyakumari and Goa to Guwahati”. Impressive stuff.

When asked what made them smart trains, he replied, “The proposal has actually been around for a while, but it was decided that the 2016 Rail Budget would be the right time to make the announcement.”

Right, but what makes them smart trains?

“They are part of the ministry and indeed government’s drive to modernise the country’s infrastructure and boost the development of connectivity within and beyond our cities.”

Okay, but what do they do differently?

“You see, we are in a digital age. And India is embracing it wholeheartedly with such initiatives as Digital India. Now to further transform the lives of people in a way we couldn’t imagine before, smart trains will empower people and bridge the divide betwee-…”

Sir, Why. Do. You. Call. Them. Smart. Trains?

“Oh, that’s an easy one. It’s because they are smart, like smart cities. And in this era of technology, we are always trying to-…”

But do you know what makes smart cities smart?

“Sorry, smart cities are not handled by this ministry.”

Faking News will watch patiently for more any details to be made known.
